College Football Playoff: Forget the Odds, Let’s Use Common Sense

First question: Is Alabama a lock to make the College Football Playoff win or lose against Georgia?

The answer is yes. There’s no chance that anything otherwise will happen. Alabama is playing for seeding at this point. They have consistently been the best team in college football all year, and the selection committee is supposed to pick the four best teams over the course of the entire season. Key word in the last sentence was entire. They’re job isn’t to punish a previously undefeated team for losing in the conference championship by making sure they don’t get a playoff spot. Could it happen? You bet. In Alabama’s case, there’s just no chance.

Here’s the task the selection committee has, and this is straight from collegefootballplayoff.com.

Four Teams

The selection committee ranks the teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field, using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparison of results against common opponents to decide among teams that are comparable.

After reading this, I think anyone using common sense would agree that Alabama is a lock, unless they lose by 70 to Georgia, which they won’t.

Assuming Clemson takes care of business, there’s pretty much one spot up for grabs, and that’s the fourth playoff spot.

In all likelihood, this team is going to play against Alabama and lose. I would love to see Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovaiola go head-to-head. If Oklahoma beats Texas and Alabama beats Georgia, I think that’s what happens. I really don’t expect much suspense when it comes time to pick these four schools, because I expect Alabama and Clemson to win this weekend.

It’s pretty simple. If Clemson wins, they’re in. If they lose, then they’re out. If Clemson loses, and both Oklahoma and Ohio State lose, then we have something to be excited about. But, does anyone think all three of those teams are going to lose?

Then there’s Danny Kanell, who only likes to look at the most recent week’s results to make decisions. Alabama’s closest game this year was a 22-point victory. But if they lose by three points to the 4th ranked team in the country they shouldn’t be in the playoff? Yeah, I can’t make sense of that argument.
