North Carolina needs a new head coach after the Larry Fedora era ended Sunday. Fedora spent seven seasons at UNC with a record of 45-43, but has been in a free-fall since the end of the 2016 season.
You could argue Fedora had a chance to be fired after last season, but UNC was unlikely to do that after giving the coach a contract extension in 2017. Now, the school’s athletic department is paying him $3million per year through 2022.

If I’m a fan of UNC, I’m glad a change has been made, possibly even relieved. But now, they’re paying out $12 million per year that could go to their next head coach. At the time, the contract extension was ahead scratcher, especially considering the 8-5 campaign in 2016 where Carolina was a pre-season favorite to win the coastal for the second consecutive season, but came up short with a team that was loaded with talent.
It wasn’t all bad for Fedora at UNC, but it was an ending to forget, going 5-18 with a 2-14 conference record in 2017 and 2018. It remains to be seen who the next head coach of the Tar Heels will be, but keep an eye on Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield as a dark horse candidate that may come a bit cheaper than some of the names you’ll hear from Power 5 programs.
